Assignment #1: Notetaking Apps

This year we are hoping that most of you will start taking your class notes on the iPad. For your first assignment, we would like you to look into notetaking Apps.  Read the reviews, then try some out.  There are many free notetaking Apps, so you do not have to purchase one if you don't want to.   Once you have tried several, write a review of your favorite as a comment to this post.  Tell us the name, how much it cost, why you liked it, and what features it offers.
It is not required, but you may want to look into getting a stylus to use when taking notes.  They range in prices, but we found a decent Acer one on Amazon for as low as $9.
Due date: August 26, 2011

  1. It depends on whether you want to type or hand-write your notes (I like to hand-write them), but for hand-writing, my favorite is Bamboo. It's a free app, although to make the most of it, you'll probably want to buy the extra pack of notebooks (in-app purchase; $1.99 for 20). This allows you to have a different notebook for each subject. My favorite part of this app is the way it allows you to write. Made especially for a stylus (although you can use you finger), it doesn't lag behind your finger/stylus, and you can change your color and width. It allows you to print and save individual pages as well as entire notebooks.
It's very practical, with a simple layout that includes undo/redo buttons and the ability to erase entire pages. If you're looking for something to handwrite notes with, Bamboo is perfect (but don't forget your stylus!)

  2. I read a lot of reviews, and I tried two free note taking apps: Tactilis, and EverNote. Tactilis is a good app if you like to write with your own handwriting and draw pictures. My preference was EverNote, because I can type my notes at the same time as I record the lecture. I can also take pictures of the board, or download images having to do with the lecture. It is also possible to sync with a home computer, including Macs or PC's. I'm going to try this app in Middle school and see how it goes.

  3. I have read the reviews on this app and they are mostly posittive. The app is called Catch Notes, it is a free app and you can add notes by voice, text, and put up images. One of my favorite features in this app is that there is a passcode to protect your personal activity, and there is also free syncing.

  4. I checked out three free apps: Evernote, PlainText and Easy Note. Plaintext is a simple app that feels like a text editor with is plain white background and is able to send your notes to other computers through dropbox I would recommend for you to avoid this app though, as for the developer has put in ads.
Easy note is is an even simpler note taking app, consisting of folders, notes and a feature to prioritize your notes . I would recommend this for people who just want a simple note taking app.

  5. I have read reviews on many note taking apps in the past week or two. There are some note taking apps where you just type on the document or on other note apps you can writie. The two apps that appealed to me the most was smart note and noterieze. These apps are both free, and fun to take notes on. You can type up your notes or change to writing it for both of these free apps. The only problem I have is, in smart note it's harder to type up your notes then write them. The smart note app is more for writing your notes, and the noterieze is more for typing up your apps.

I have downloaded several note taking apps, but my favorite one was noterize. It was mentioned above in another post aswell. I like it because you can't type and write your notes on the same document. You can highlight parts of your notes you want to stand out. You can also add sticky notes and pictures. The app has different types of paper you can choose from, including lined, blank, and graph paper. This app is free also. I really like this app from what I have seen so far and think it will be helpful once school starts!

  7. I really like Penultimate because you could create different notebooks for different subjects if you wanted. Penultimate is an only hand written note taker, which without a stylus is a little annoying, but in a pinch it's easy to just scribble something down on a blank page. Since it's handwriting only, you can also doodle while you're taking notes. For some this nay be helpful, for others distracting.

  8. Noterize is the best note taking app I have ever tried out! Not only can you type your notes, you can personally draw it out and do any notation you want with it with the tip of your finger. If your in a math class that requires graph paper, they also offer the graph paper option. With the draw function, you could draw out any 2D, 3D shapes you want instead of carrying tons of paper with you and drawing it with a pencil. It also comes with a highlighter option.

  9. There are two notetaking apps that i find very useful. One is Evernote. Evernote allows you to take down notes, save pictures or web pages, and view Pdf files. You can sync all your notes into any computer that has Evernote downloaded onto it and view all your files. I like that it offers the synching feature so that i can work on my computer and later on save it into my Evernote, to be viewed and finished on my iPad. The ither notetaking app i find useful is iNotes Lite. iNotes Lite does not offer the synching feature, however, it has more features for note taking during class. You can play around with the font and highlight important details, two features i find very useful that Evernote doesn't offer. I would use iNotes Lite for note taking during class and Evernote to sync my documents between my computer and iPad.

  10. I forgot to add that both Evernote and iNotes Lite are free.

  11. I tried a bunch of note taking apps and my favorites are Bamboo and Tactilis. They're both free. In both of them. You can. Choose different types of paper( plain, line, or graph). Bamboo is just for taking notes and I think Tactilis is made for drawing but works for taking notes too.one thing that you can do on Tactilis tap with two fingers and it will zoom on the part you're writing so you can use bigger hand writing and it wont be too big. In Bamboo you can zoom but you have to zoom out if you need to move over. Over all I think I like Bamboo better I like the design better and the pen part works better for me.

  12. I have tried a few notetaking apps as well. I definitely prefer typing over hand-writing notes because I am much faster at typing. My favorite app so far is Notability. It's $2.99, but it's definitely worth it. I really like it because it is very easy to quickly start taking notes with if a teacher says something that you find necessary to write down quickly. It allows you to organize your notes into subjects to keep them organized. It also can export to Dropbox.

Another app I have been looking at is CourseNotes. I don't have it yet, but I'm probably going to buy it. The app is $4.99, but it looks like it's worth it. It allows you to take individual notes in a "session" so it's easier to find exactly what you're looking for. I'm still trying to find a really good notetaking app that's exactly what I'm looking for, but I'm not having much luck. I'll keep looking.

  13. I read a lot of reviews and looked at almost all of the apps that appstart recamended and the app that I found most effective is Note Taker HD. It costs $4.99 and a stylus is useful. One really cool feature is that you write and it avcually shrinks your writing down so it is like you are writing small. It is easier to use a stylus but your finger works as well. The only problem that I am having is that I can't figure out how to send to dropbox. The app review says it can but I haven't figured out how yet.

  14. I downloaded Evernote, Noterize, Dragon Dictation, and Notes n More. All of them are free. I especially like Evernote because it syncs with my computer as well as my itouch. I downloaded Dragon for the capability of recording lectures. Dragon does not have the capability of typing or handwriting notes, though, and doesn't always catch the correct words. You have to be very clear with it. Notes n More is more if you need to write little reminders as it syncs with the built-in calendar. I have to say that Noterize is helpful in preferences of paper. It has many choices; such as yellow lined paper or blank paper. It also gives the feature of scribbling notes with your finger, highlighting, and inserting audio memos. If you just want to write [type] something out quick I wouldn't hesitate to use the built-in Notes.

  15. I found two notetaking apps that were free. Evernote and Noterize. Evernote is liked it was great to manage, but I liked the style and how easy it was just to take notes on Noterize. You can type, write, record, and also highlight and add side notes. Another great feature with Noterize is that you can import and save documents into DropBox. Either notetaking app is great, especially for being free, but I would stick to using Noterize.

  16. I really like Noterize. First of all, it is free. It looks like a real yellow notepad, which I think is cool. You can either type or write notes with your finger. It also has a voice recording option to record voice notes. You can bookmark your most important notes.

  18. I have tried manny note taking apps so far, but my favorites would definintly be evernote and nebulous light. I have tried live notes lite, epinote hd, sundry notes, and sketch pad as well as the two previously listed. I like evernote because you can have an account similar to dropbox where it saves your work. This helps me because I can later access it from a computer. I like nebulous light for a similat reason. You can save things directly from nebulous light to dropbox as well as see all of your files. I also like the recording feature on evernote. I think it will be very useful in class because you will be able to go back and listen to the things that you didn't understand.

  20. My favorite note taking app was noterize. I liked noterize because you can write or type with it and it's free. I am personally a typing person but if I decided not to I could switch without having to get another app. One of it's features was that you could slide your finger across a bar to change the font size and not have to type the number you want like a computer. I also like that you can type in the name you want that set of notes to be so that you don't have to search through all of your notes for the ones that your looking for.

  21. I have tried many note-taking apps, with very mixed success. At first I just preferred using pages just because it was easy and simple, but my favorite is one that some other people have also mentioned, noterize. You can highlight, add stickies, borders, and of course, type, easily and I always use things like that in my notes, it just makes everything much easier for me. Also, one of the exporting options that Noterize has is to move it to Dropbox, which no other note-taking apps I tried had, so then it's easy for me to access it from anywhere! Also, it's easy to find your notes and edit them too.

  22. I tried several different note-taking apps, and the one I thought was the most helpful was Evernote. Evernote is a free app. Not only can you take notes during class, but it also allows you to record the lecture, so when you've taken notes and you're at home, you could go over the lecture and write in any other details that you may have missed. You could also send your notes to your e-mail.

  24. I tried a few different note taking apps, and my favorite was Audio Note (4.99). I like that it can be used to type notes or to handwrite them. When handwriting, the app doesn't recognize your hand, you can rest your wrist on the screen and it will still right. Also, whether typing or writing, the app records whoever is talking while you write. Later you can go back and tap on a word and it will play whatever was being said when that word was written. This can be very useful when going over notes before a test.

  25. After scanning over people's comments I chose noterize as my first note taking app. Noterize is a great note taking app. One reason why is because you have options. Like a computer you can decide what font you would like to type in. You can also interact with the piece of paper by choosing many different colors to write and type in. But that isn't all, you can also choose what you're writing on. For instance if you want to draw, you could use blank paper, there is also yellow and white lined paper, graph paper, and you can even move a essay onto the sheet of paper.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I also downloaded Evernote for free. In Evernote you could tag pictures, record your voice, and type. That's about it. I liked Noterize way better because you could get more creative with it such as highlighting with various colors and changing what you're writing on. When I looked through the blogs that people have sent, it looks to me that people have thought that Noterize was the best note taking app.

  27. I tried several different note taking apps, but the one I liked the best was noterize. I like that this app simply let's you type and use a stylus. If you zoom inward on your note page you will find that the pen thickness reduces. You can also change the color of " ink" you want. Noterize has elements that I use in my notes such as highlighting, and sticky notes. Also this app is ompletely free! For me noterize is a fun and easy way for taking my notes!-- sonali

  28. Based on the different apps I tried, I liked Catch Notes and EverNote the most. On Catch Notes you can really organize you're work. You can also sync you're work to the web and you're phone. I love the fact how you can also take pictures, and use the voice recorder for numeral things. I like EverNote because it's secure because you have to have a password. same as Catch Notes you can also take pictures and use a voice clip. It's a lot of fun. I definitely feel more organized.

  29. My favorite note app so far would be smartNote (free). I like it because you have the ability to place pictures, URLs, links, and can handwrite or type. You can create a different notebook for every subject and can bookmark specific pages or create tags if you think there are important things to return to.

  31. I've tried a number of note taking apps so far, such as Evernote, Tactilis, Penultimate, Bamboo, Noterize, and Plain Text. All of these apps (with the exception of Penultimate, $1.99) are free. My favorites are Penultimate, Evernote, and Noterize. Penultimate is really great for handwriting, though I use a stylus and it would probably be harder without one. I like how Evernote backs up notes. However, the one I use the most is Noterize, because it allows you to both type and write, which I find helpful for subjects such as math and Spanish. It also allows you to insert pictures, record audio, and annotate PDFs. While it is not the most outstanding app in any of the individual categories, all of its different features will give you most of what you need in a classroom setting.

  32. Noterize is a cool app because 1 it was free and 2 there are many different ways of taking notes on this app. I recommend noterize

  33. I tried three different apps. My favorite is Noterize, because of the ability to type and handwrite. I also liked that is free and that it has lined paper instead of white. I have trouble using the stylus, so I do not like bamboo paper, because you can only write handwritten notes. Evernote is ok, except that you have to make an account on it and you can only type.

  34. Out of the frees note taking apps I tried, I think I like evernote the best. It does have it's drawbacks in that you can only type, and it only records audio. I read several reviews, and I think if I buy one I will probably get Notepad pro. It let's you type or writes you record lectures. It also has notebook and graph paper available, and you can save your notes as PDF files to email to yourself.

  35. So far I've been using Noterize (free) to take notes. It's really nice because you can type as well as draw/write free hand. Its also cool because you can import PDF files into Noterize and essentially annotate them. I've mostly been typing, since the handwriting is difficult without a stylus - I'm hoping to try one out soon. I wish you could put multiple PDFs into a note set, as well as make tabs in a note set to keep me more organized, so I'll probably try some others out.

My favorite note taking app so far is Evernote. Evernote is free. just like Noterize, you can create multiple different pages at once. The difference that i like about Everote is that I can title the different notes if I have different subjects to take notes on. In Evernote, you have the options of attaching an audio recording or a picture. Today in Spanish I recorded Mark talking, played it back and wrote down everything i needed to know. In Evernote you don't have the option of writing in you own handwriting, but the app works just the same. With this app to save you notes you have the option of sending it to yourself through email or if a friend needs the notes you have the option of sending an email or sending a Twitter or Facebook message to them.

I really enjoyed using neu. Notes. This application is really useful to me because you can easily write down notes in a timely manner. It is also easier to use when you want to study because personally, I find it better to teach it to myself and this app allows me to do that.

  38. I liked noterize the best. It's free, and it has a blank page option, a white page, yellow lined page, graph paper page, and a bunch of other things. It works great with my finger, although it is a little hard to write fast with just a finger. I love how you can record audio too, and it goes with the page you are on. I also like how dropbox is built in to it for sharing.

  39. I like the note taking app evernote. I especially like using it during math with Kemi. I record what she is saying and type what is on the board. It is also very easy to organize. I also really like the app dragon dictation which is also free. It turns a recording into words. I personally don,t like the ones where you write with a pen. If you are going to do that then you might as well have paper, I am a faster typer.

  40. I downloaded a couple of free note taking apps including Evernote and Noterize.  They are both good apps, but for note taking I've decided that I prefer using Pages.  I am someone who prefers typing my notes rather than handwriting them.  Pages (9.99) allows me to easily create documents and organize them into folders for each of my classes.  It is easy to back them up by email or Dropbox.  I just find Pages to be the most productive app for me when it comes to note taking.  It has excellent features and is very easy to use.

  41. My favorite note taking app so far is Notability, which is free. It's perfect for typing notes because it has an easy interface that makes it easy to quickly make a note. I used it in math this morning and found it very easy to use. There were a couple times I needed to draw something, and Notability allows you to insert a drawing if you need it. It can record audio, if you want it to, as well. I have a Bluetooth keyboard for my iPad that makes it much quicker and easier to type.

Evernote is another good option for notetaking. I especially like how it syncs to your computer and online. Pages is another great option if you need tables or something like that. Plus, it can export to Word for the computer. I definitely like typing notes better; however, for something like math, handwriting might be easier for solving practice problems or something like that. I might look at getting a stylus for handwriting notes because I find it hard to use my finger. Penultimate is the ultimate (no pun intended) app for note taking by hand. You can even rest your hand on the screen. Make sure to download the free writing pack for notebook-style paper.

  42. My favorite note taking app so far is Evernote, which is free. I like this app alot because it is easy to use and is good for jotting down quick notes. It also synchs with my computer when i plug it in and it also has an easy print or email button in the app. I also like the fact that it has different types of fonts and allows you to make things bold, or italicized.

  43. I like this one app called InClass. It functions as a planner, a note taker and you can save your schedule there. My experience thus far has been that taking notes on the ipad is not nearly as effective or sensible as taking notes either on my computer or by hand. Perhaps this is because I'm not all that comfortable with typing on the keybord yet. So maybe this will change as I continue to use the iPad.

I'd recommend this app, InClass, as a planner and for jotting down quikc thinngs but if you are a person who takes a lot of notes and likes to keep up with the teacher and the lecture then im afraid this may not be for you.

  44. Sorry abut this being late -- i wrote it on a google doc, then didn't realize it had to go here!!
Anyways, i reviewed TheNotebook Lite. This app is nifty, it's got a lot of options... except one: an eraser. You can draw and write in any color in an rbg spectrum, but you can't erase it. The only way to erase something is by clearing the whole page. So say you wrote a 2 in math class, but you really meant 7. you either have to scribble it out (not an option for finicky/picky notetakers) or clear the whole freaking page!! A number of times i had to go to teachers after class and say, "sorry but when you were talking about C. Wright Mills, and you drew the diagram, i completely missed it. Can you redraw it for me?" which is really a pain in the butt to be honest.
Since i got the "Lite" version, there's occasionally a banner advertisement, conveniently located in the middle of my note page. If i want go get rid of it, i'd have to buy the app. There's also two advertisements that automatically come up whenever you open the app. Also annoying.

Although there are some severe downsides to this app, (maybe the non-lite version is better...) i love that you can categorize your different note pages, and that you can write in different colors. It's great for people like me who find color a great way to organize your notes!

Even with that, it's still not an app i'm going to be using in class very often. Pages works fine for me.

  45. I think that Noterize is totally the best note taking app that I have tried. It is easy to get to in class, and it does way more than just type. You can use your finger as a stylus almost. You can also change the font and the color of the words if you wanted to. I definitely recommend Noterize.

  47. After trying various note taking apps, I've come to the conclusion that electronic notes simply aren't for me. I tried using a stylus in various apps, but I found that when I'm writing, I don't lift the stylus high enough for the touchscreen to realize that I'm no longer touching the screen. I tried typing class notes (with or without a hardware keyboard), but it was slower than writing.

There is one note taking app, though, that I have been using on my iPod Touch since long before this pilot program began: iOS's native Notes app. As simple as can be, the Notes app perfect for jotting down quick reminders.

A less-known feature of iOS's Notes app is its ability to use an email account to sync wirelessly between devices. If you set up your mail account using IMAP (the default for Gmail), there will be an option to sync notes. Switching this on will create a Notes folder in your email account, with which the Notes app will sync. If you set up other iOS devices and Mac OS's Mail application to sync with the same email account, the notes will sync between these devices. In my experience, notes synced with an email account are viewable, but not editable, using your email provider's web app or email clients other than Mac OS's Mail.

  48. I downloaded many note taking apps both paid and free. From all of the note taking apps that I tested I found "Notability" to be the most useful. At $2.99 it can be hard for some to buy when they can easily take notes with a free app, but I must say it is worth the money for sure. I take notes with "notability" for all of my classes. I cant list all of the Features but you can record audio that links to the text, take pictures with the iPad camera and place them anywhere, the text will wrap around pictures and drawings, you can add clips from web pages or draw your own figures, easily create bulleted and numbered outlines, all of your notes are saved automatically, also, any notes can be easily e-mailed, sent to itunes, backed up to dropbox, sent to iDisk, and, if you have a printer that allows it, printed. This app keeps me organized and is easy to use, if you aren't completely satisfied with your current note taking app you should check it out.

  49. my favorite note taking app was pages, because of how similar it is to microsoft word. i also like how you can email and send all of your notes as a pdf file. I also like how you can print your documents. one thing i don't like is how you can only print to hp special printers.

  50. My favorite not taking app would be Pages. I really like pages becuase it is a simple typing app before when i tryed one i hand wrote i didnt work out well i even bought a stylist but it still didnt work out like i had planed. I like pages because 1 you can agust your font syle... and so on... also it is easy to print with its just one easy to find button with some of the other apps it took me 10 minutes just to find that button. Also thak you for giving us a code to et those for free that really helped me alot!
