Assignment #3: iPads by Subject

During our meeting last week we discussed which classes you all were able to use your iPads in and which classes you were not able to use them.  For some, it was because of the layout of the class and for others, it was because your teachers either encourage or discourage their use.  For this assignment, please answer the following questions as thoroughly as possible:
1.  Which classes are you using the iPad in the most?  Why do you think this is?  What sorts of things are you doing with them in these classes?
2.  Which classes are you using the iPad the least?  Why do you think this is?  What ideas do you have for how they could be used in these classes?
3.  What grade are you in?

Please do not use any teachers' names - only class names.  This assignment is due on September 23rd.

  1. 1. I am using my iPad the most in French. I use it to take notes in this class using the app Noterize and I have the Wordreference app on it to translate words from French to English and vice versa. I think the reason I use it so much in this class is because there are so many opportunities to use it.
    2. I think I use my iPad the least in art. I never use it. I don't really have a need for it in that class. I think I could use it in this class really to just write down assignments.

  2. 1) I am using my iPad mostly in social studies. We have to take alot of notes, so it's a quick and easy way for me to do it (typing) on my iPad. I use pages for this. I also use my iPad for literature to take notes, I use it for lit because I have a stylus pen and it's easy for me to take vocab notes, and draw diagrams showing plot, hero,s journey, etc.
2)I don't use my IPad in math. This is the only class where I handwrite assignments and notes because by the end of the year I have to have a portfolio of all my math work, and I feel that writing is easier for me and it is also easier to draw charts and diagrams. I could use the iPad to write down assignments, and I could try to find an app that allows me to type and draw charts and diagrams.

    2. I don't use it in math because the teacher said I couldn't

  5. 1. I am using the iPad in my history class the most because everyone uses technology and I prefer the iPad to the net books. Also I feel that the iPad is easier to use then the iPad. I also use my iPad for biology because it is great for taking and keeping track of my notes. I have also started writing papers on my iPad for lit and have been using my iPad for Spanish and Math as well. I feel that I use the iPad so much because it is a very useful tool and it helps so much with organization. The iPad is a lot more fun to take notes on than paper. I take notes in class, make PowerPoints for presentations, find pictures to help explain stuff, look up information, study for many different tests and more.
    2. I feel that I am using the iPad the least in Spanish because I only really use it to study flash cards but in most of my other classes I use the iPad for much more. I also think that I don't use it as much in math because I haven't really started taking notes yet, but as soon as I do I feel that I will use the iPad more. For lit as soon as I get the books on the iPad I will use it more. With Spanish I can start incorporating the iPad into class by taking notes on it.
    3. I am in 9th grade.

  6. 1) I've been using my iPad the most in Writing because I have to take notes. I've also been using my iPad as a schedule.
    2) I don't use my iPad in science because I don't want anything to spill on it. I also don't use it because my teacher expects us to write information down really fast and I don't type that fast.
    3) I'm in seventh grade.

  7. I use the iPad the most in history class and forensics (i'm the teaching assistant in forensics). I use the iPad for these classes the most because I'm taking notes that don't involve things like numbers (math) and because my teachers allow it (I'm not allowed to use it in lit class). In history I have a running Pages document for history where I take all my notes. In forensics I help Rick by editing old labs.

I don't use the iPad in French, math or lit. In lit I'm not allowed to use the iPad. In French the iPad doesn't recognize French unless I change the overall language, and even though I know enough French, I don't think I'm comfortable locking my iPad into another language. In math I don't feel comfortable writing on an iPad because it's too hard to write on the iPad both legibly and small enough that I can get more than three numbers on a single page. There's really not much to be done about lit or French, and math may just be a personal preference thing. Who knows.

    And I am a senior!

  8. 1) I use the iPad most in either lit. or writing. I use it in lit. for taking all of my notes and for using the documents that my teacher tells us to download off of wikispaces ( study guides or note outlines). I use the iPad for almost everything in writing. The only this that I don't use it for is jotting down ideas when I'm just brainstorming.

    2) I don't use my the iPad at all for science. I'm worried that something would spill on it.

    3) I'm in 7th grade.

  10. 1) I'm using the iPad it lit, writing and RCG. These are the classes that we take most of our notes in, so it's really helpful to have the iPad to store all my notes for these classes in.
    2) the classes that I don't use the iPad in is science and math. In science I would rather have all my notes in my binder, and because sometimes we do labs i don't want anything to get placed on the iPad and then mess it up.
I don't use the iPad in math because we have to keep all of our home works and notes in one notebook.
    3) I'm in 8th grade.

  11. 1. I am using the IPad mostly in Lit, Writing, and Homebase meetings. I am using it to take notes all the time. It is way easier than having to get a sheet of paper out. It is also helpful when I have to copy down homework. I can just put it in my planner app.
    2. The classes I mostly don't use my iPad in is math and science. In science I have to keep everything in a binder so that if my teacher needs to see it they can. In math my teacher likes us to do everything in one notebook because sometimes they have to collect the notebooks to look at them.
    3. I am in the 7th grade.

  12. 1. I use my iPad the most in writing, lit., and taking notes sometimes. I think I use it the most in these classes because there is lots of writing. In both classes I have to write, and since I prefer to type that works for me.
    2. I use my iPad the least in math and spainish. I think this is because they are both in different languages, so to speak. In math it's hard to use it because you have to draw so manny diagrams. I think it's hard to use it in Spanish because you can't easily acess the symbols you need to write in spanish. I think it might make it easier if these classes were centered around the technology, otherwise I just think it's hard to use.

  13. 1. I use my iPad most in World Civ (History). I think it's because we are really encouraged (actually we have to take notes on computers or iPads) to use the iPads, and the cirruculum reallly works with it, finding current events articles, searching the web constantly, and typing up notes and essays is really perfect for the iPad, which is what we do in that class.
    2. I use my iPad least in Math. In math there's so many different symbols, and I just perfer writing it out so I can work through the problem and take notes on what I do wrong, and it's hard to write small and legibly on the iPad. I could probably figure out a way to use it in math, but I don't think it would really help me as much as hand-writing it.

  14. 1) I use my IPad the most in Spanish because I research a lot and it's faster then trying to pull out a laptop and turn it on and then open up th browser. I use it in Spanish because I can do research when I have projects, and it help me a lot.

    2) I use it least in math because my math teacher usually has us write in our notebooks.

  15. 1) I use my iPad mostly in my home base classes including lit, and geography, because I need to look up things a lot, like random people they are talking about. In geography, I will sometimes have to look up world maps and things like that.
    2) I use it least in Math, because my math teacher recommends us to use our notebooks, and I don't need to write down the homework pages because I already printed them out from the computer, so I don't have to always write them down.

  16. I'm in the 8th grade. I use my iPad the most in History class. I think it's one of the easiest class to take notes in because all you have to type are some facts of what you think is important and what the teacher wants you to write. The class I don't use it for is math class. I think it's hard to use it in math because you would have to write down formulas and variables and stuff that might take you a while, and the teacher may not want to wait for you. That's why it'd be easy to do it in History class or Lit class

  17. 1. I don't really use my iPad much in classes still, but when I do it is to look up words (in lit, chemistry, and history), go on the same website that's being projected on the active board, or to type as opposed to handwriting (in lit and history). For homework, I use it to look at my math teacher's webpage where our homework is, look at photos of class notes that were on the board, look up words, type history/lit essays, and study flashcards for Chem, history, or Spanish.
    2. I never use my iPad in math class. I think there are ways this could happen if I had a great note taking app that could do many things such as insert graph paper and let you hand write. I'm sure such an app exists, but as I am in a math class that goes at a relatively fast pace I don't want to miss anything because I'm trying to figure out how to work my iPad.

  18. 1. I use my iPad most in the classes in which I take notes in the most: math, writing, RCG, and court because note taking is what I primarily use my iPad for. I find taking notes on my iPad very efficient and easy, and it's a much more eco-friendly and easy way to take notes than using paper. I really like the ability to record sound, like a lecture (which I haven't had a use for quite yet but I'm sure I will soon), and the ability to search your notes in most apps. I also use it frequently in Spanish because I can quickly and easily translate something I want to say into Spanish from English. Also, last year in Spanish, we had to do the activities from our textbook on paper which we later got rid of, so this year, I just keep a running document on my iPad to use.

    2. I use my iPad the least in art (I don't use it at all in art). This is because there really isn't a use for it with the things we are doing, such as sculptures and collages. Contrary to others, I find it helpful in math and science - the only problem is the symbols in math, but otherwise, it's great.

    3. I'm in 8th grade.

  19. 1.I use my iPad the most during our food talk. It's basically our Social Studies, so many important things are being said, so I usually take a lot of notes during that time. Sometimes I have to research some food networking site, to find out more details for my notes.

    2. I have never this year used my iPad during science. I wish I could, but when you are taking notes, Che prefers that we have it written in our notebook, so that when he has to collect our notebooks for one night, he doesn't take our Ipad with him. I only use my Ipad for my K.O.P job, and my food talk.

    3. I am in 7th grade.

  20. 1. I use the iPad in my history class the most. I think this is because I use the iPad for note taking more than anything else, and the majority of what we do in history class is taking notes.

    2. I don't use my iPad ever in math class. I have a graphing calculator that I have to use for AP Stat and I find it too difficult to try to take notes with any of the note taking apps. I prefer using paper and pencil for notes in math. I am not sure how we can utilize iPads in math class. But, the camera is helpful for taking pictures of what my teacher writes on the board.

    3. I am in 12th grade.

  21. 1. I use the iPad in Lit class most. Whenever we have in class writing, which seems to be often, I use it instead of handwriting because it's easier
    2. I use it least in math class because it's easier to take notes on paper because a lot of times we have to draw graphs and funky equation symbols. If there were an app with a straight edge tool that would be better.

  22. 1. I use my iPad most during history and lit. These classes are both more discussion based, and they are harder to study from a textbook, so I like typing notes faster than I would be able to write them. I also like to record these classes so I can refer back to specific points when writing essays or preparing for tests. I can also write papers easily in class, which I do most in these two classes.
    2. I use my iPad least in Spanish. I still take notes; there are simply fewer notes to take. The language doesn't really bother me because I usually handwrite instead of type. I think most of the iPad's potential in this class is with study apps outside of class itself, which is how I use it most.
    3. I am in the 10th grade.

  23. 1. I use my iPad most during history and French. My teacher John, is a HUGE history fan and he's talking to us about these really interesting things 100 miles an hour, so it is extremely useful to have a history section on your iPad full of notes instead of buying a whole sepeate binder that takes up tons of space in your backpack. In hitory, it could also be used by lookng up useful facts that John points out but doesn't remember. In French it is also used a lot because I store all my flashcards in Quizard Lite and it is super easy to look up words wit Word Reference.

    2. I use my iPad least during lit and math. In math the iPad is not necessary because we require a spiral notebook, if we used the iPad for a notebook we would have to turn in our iPads and I need it for my other stuff. In lit it's also not as needed as most subjects.

    3. I am in 7th grade

  24. I found that I use my iPad mostly in lit for writing assignments, Spanish for translating words and math because I have my math book on my iPad. I use my iPad the least in politics and history because our teacher has discouraged us from taking notes on because he can't keep up with it.

  25. I am using my iPad equally in each class, but i think the best class to use it for has been history. I am able to take a lot more notes then when I am handwriting, and because I use AudioNote, i can record the class. It is really helpful when studying to be able to go back and listen to the lecture again. If I didn't catch something first and I can't tell what the notes are talking about, I can just re-listen to what the teacher was saying.

I am not really using my iPad in french class, but not because it is not useful. In my french class one person takes notes for the whole class each day, so there is no need for me to take notes on my iPad until it's my turn. When it is my turn though, I think the iPad will be useful because there are international keyboards, so I can take notes using a french keyboard.

  26. 1. I'm using the iPad mostly in Lit and History because those are the two classes that I have to take a lot of notes in. I mostly use Noterize and sometimes I use Safari in history if there's something my teacher wants us to look up.
    2. I use my iPad the least in Photography, because I don't need it, and Spanish because we do more talking than writing notes. Maybe if I had more stuff to write down the iPad would be helpful.
    3. I'm a sophomore.

  27. 1 i use my iPad in Spanish mostly, but alot of times use it race class and gender. in those classes, i use pages, the provided note taker, and the spanish english dictionary.
2 i use the ipad the least in math because it is almost impossible to use it. i think that if there was an easier way of writing notes using your hand, i would use that
    3 i'm in eighth grade

  28. 1. I am using my iPad the most in history. I use it to record the lecture and to write down notes. The reason I think that the iPad is easy to use for history is that history is a very factual and note oriented class. It isn't as much concepts or understanding and working a lot of problems. Just being able to relisten to the lecture and memorize it is really all you need for history.

2.The class I use it the least for is lit. This is mostly because of how my class is organized. It is a very discussion organized class. The whole point is to talk like a conversation about short stories we read. So far there hasn't been many definitions or traditional notes. I can usually just jot down a quick word or highlight something in the book. If I had originally just bought all my books on the iPad, then I would probably be using it much more.

  29. 1.I use my iPad the most in grammar and civics. My iPad is a good fast way to take notes. We use google docs to put our homework on. It is easy to cut and paste from pages.
2.I use my iPad the least in math. This is because I am left handed and cannot write math problems with a stylus. It is hard to type math problems so I just do it on paper.
    3.I am in 7th grade.

    ReplyDelete
  30. 1. I use my iPad most in World Civ and Biology. In World Civ, we have to research stuff on the internet and look up new articles, which is easy to do the iPad thanks to lots of news apps. In Bio, I take all my notes on the iPad, and it's helpful to be able to take pictures of things on the board.

    2. I use my iPad least in math. I tried taking notes on it for a while, and if it were not for graphing, I still would. With a stylus, it's easy for me to write and I like having lots of different colors. Also, having my notes on the iPad would make my math binder half the size. However, we do a lot of graphing, and I find I can't be quite precise enough to get my points exactly where they need to be. Another reason I don't take math notes on the iPad is that we have portfolio projects, which is where our math teacher grades our notebooks, so I have to have all my notes in my binder. Therefore, there isn't really a reason to have them on the iPad as well.

  32. 1. I use my iPad most in Literature class because it mostly contains taking notes, thus i use my notes app frequently. We also do vocabulary and instead of making real flashcards, i use FlashCardlet to make flashcards and continually add on to them. Also, i write my papers and essays on my iPad. I use my ipad mostly for the writing aspect of school and literature happens to involve thd most writing.
    2. I use my ipad least in spanish because there are no options( that i know of) that allows me to inout accent marks when i am doing my work in spanish. There are only three classes i use my ipad for and those classes are lit, history, and spanish. Out of those three, i use my iPad least in. Also, my spanish class involves much talking to practice our verbal skills, thus i am not even writing most of the time.
    3. I'm in 11th grade.

  33. 1. I use the iPad the most in history. It is because in this classm there are no formulas or accents that I have to worry about typing, and it is just strait forward note taking. I find it very helpful in this class also, because my teacher will sometimes ask for a student to look up a fact, and it is really easy for me to do that.
    2. I don't use the iPad in French class and it is because I find it easier to write my notes down. We also don't take as many notes in french, so there wouldn't be as much use for it.
    3. I am in 10th grade.

  34. 1.  Which classes are you using the iPad in the most?  Why do you think this is?  What sorts of things are you doing with them in these classes?
I am using the iPad most in Spanish Civ and Culture and APPhysics. In Spanish I use it most frequently for accessing the teacher webpage to check assignments on the calendar or the blog for quiz notes or to make or comment on blog posts. In physics I use it for looking at PDFs for labs or homework assignments.
    2.  Which classes are you using the iPad the least?  Why do you think this is?  What ideas do you have for how they could be used in these classes?
I use the iPad least in my seminar lit class because use of laptops and iPads is discouraged, but mainly because I like having an actual book in my hands and being able to annotate and write notes in this book. I also do not use the iPad in math class (seminar in math and physics) because the class is a lot of abstract thinking rather than note taking.

    3.  What grade are you in?
    I am in 12th grade

  35. 1. I have to say literature and in History. In literature, I upload PDFs on short stories that I could read right on to the ipad and I take all notes on it, helps with managing vocabs. and History to record my notes since I am more of a visual learner, and my teacher doesn't necessarily write down all things from discussion, I find it resourceful to look back at the day's discussion
    2. I use it least in AP Chem, there is just so much formula writing and number usage, that trying to actually take the time and create good notes for this class is very time consuming. I also don't use it much in ADV French Lit and Film since at first I didn't know how to type in french with this. Now that I solved that out I use it much more often to take notes.

  36. 1. I use the iPad the most in history and French. I use it in history to record the lectures and so I can annotate my notes at home. I use the iPad in French to pretty much use word reference.com

    2. I use it the least in ap chemistry because that involves that class requires more calculations and hands-on activities.

    3. I'm in the 11th grade

  37. I use the iPad to take notes in all of my classes. I probably use it the most in physics because I can easily draw the pictures the teacher draws on my iPad using "notability". I use the iPad the least in probably lit simply because I do not take notes in lit. I am in the 12th grade

  38. What grade are you in?

    I am in 11th grade.

    1.  Which classes are you using the iPad in the most?

I use my iPad very often in AP Bio and Literature.

In Bio, I view my textbook using the Pearson eText app, my review for which can be found on the App Review spreadsheet. I also use Numbers to create lab reports. I find it much easier to use Numbers for iPad than to make tables and graphs on paper or to use a spreadsheet application on a PC.

In Lit, I use my iPad for nearly all writing assignments. Because the iPad is so light and it's battery lasts so long, it makes more sense to carry my iPad around than a laptop. Typing on an iPad isn't a major problem for me because although I can't type as quickly on an iPad than on a physical keyboard, on an iPad I can type about as quickly as I can think.

    2.  Which classes are you using the iPad the least?

I use my iPad the least in Spanish and in Precalculus.

Although Spanish-English dictionaries are useful, I don't find myself using them very often in class. Most of the words that I'd look up can already be found in the textbook. Most of the work in my Spanish class revolves around worksheets. When we do writing assignments, I prefer to use paper when writing in Spanish. Although the iPad keyboard's method of inputting accented characters is sufficient for the occasional æ, é, ï, or ü that pops up in English writing, it's a pain to have to hold down a key and wait half a second for more than a couple times per paragraph.

In Precalculus, I haven't found my iPad to be very useful. I've used a graphing calculator app before, my review for which can be found on the App Review spreadsheet, but it doesn't have all the functionality of a TI-84.
Occasionally, when there's information on the board that I don't have time to write down, I'll take a picture of it with my iPad's camera. This is so far the best use of my iPad that I've found for Precalculus.

  39. 1. I have been using my iPad mostly in our class food studies. I am the official note keeper so I am keeping track of everything we talk about in class including guests and movies. I also use it to take notes in eighth grade social studies.
    2. I never use my iPad in spanish or art. I never use it in art because we are painting and drawing. Spanish we are mostly speaking or writing things down on a worksheet that Mark has given us.

  40. 1. I am using my iPad the most in my history (world religions) class. For that class, we have a communal set of notes, but I find that sometimes people don't take very good notes, and that I trust my own ones more, so I take lots of notes on my iPad. I don't think that it is much harder to type on it than on an actual keyboard. It is the class that I take the most notes in. Also, I look up lots of things, like when we were talking about whether the disciples of Jesus had children or not, I was the first person to give a definite answer, because everybody else had to pull out their phones or laptops, and I just had mine out and ready to go.

    2. I use my iPad least in math class (discrete math.) Although I just found an app that lets you type in equations, Wolfram Alpha, and I'm starting to use it more, there just is not a good way to take notes easily and quickly for math. It is because of all of the complicated equations and symbols. I think that if JoJo typed some of the equations and sent them to everybody, it would be very useful.

  41. 1) i believe I am using th eipad mostly in language arts. We have read a few books that have quite a bit to do with history, so whenever tom brings up a touchstone that i dont know, i can easily look it up on the iPad.
    2) i use my iPad least in math. I would be able to if i were better at writing equations quickly, but it is a lot easier for me to just write all of the notes on a piece of paper.
